Data Sheet
The potentiometer R33 is used to adjust VEE+ to get
the best image contrast. Turning the potentiometer
clockwise increases VEE+.
A zener diode, D33, reduces the voltage generated
by the switching regulator for the DMTN panels, which
operate on a lower VEE+ than the passive color panel.
To extend the function of the protection circuitry on
the evaluation board to a LCD panel connected to the
add-on board, the positive VEE+ generated on the add-
on board is controlled by the negative VEE- generated
on the evaluation board. Transistors Q31 and Q33 are
used to switch VEE+ on the add-on board. When the
LCD controller in the LH77790A/B generates the
proper clock signals for the LCD panel, VEE- is
switched on by the protection circuitry. This, in turn,
enables VEE+ on the add-on board through Q31 and
Q33. Likewise, if the LCD clock signals are not gener-
ated by the LH77790A/B, the protection circuitry turns
off VEE-, which causes VEE+ on the add-on board to
be turned off. This mechanism requires that VEE- is
available at pin 43 of the expansion connector J12 on
the evaluation board. Please see the section ‘Connect-
ing the LU7790H2D1A’ for details.
For more information on the LCD protection mecha-
nism, please refer to the LU7790H2BK2 Hardware
Development Toolkit User’s Guide.
Backlight Power Supply
The DMTN panels LM4Q30TA and LM5Q40TA use
a LED backlight that operates from a voltage of 5 V.
The 2-pin header JP2 provides +5 V and GND for the
LED backlight.
A cable will be required between JP2 and the LED
backlight connector on the LCD panel. This cable is not
included with the add-on board.
The LM5Q32 passive color panel uses a cold-cath-
ode fluorescent tube (CCFT) for backlighting. An
inverter module is required to generate the high AC
voltage for the CCFT, for example, the inverter from
TDK, part number CXA-L0612. For details on the
CCFT, please see the data sheet of the LM5Q32.
JP3 on the add-on board provides the power supply
to inverters such as the CXA-L0612.
Pin 1 and pin 3 of JP3 are connected to the power
jack of the evaluation board and provide the 8 VDC to
12 VDC voltage supplied to the evaluation board.
Pin 4 of JP3 provides the brightness control signal
and is set for nearly maximum brightness with the CXA-
L0612 inverter.
NOTE:
Power supply cable for the inverter is not included with the
LU7790H2D1A board. This allows the connection of different
inverter types.
LCD Data and Control Signals
The LM5Q32 passive color panel operates at 5 V
and uses 5 V signal levels. The panel can be con-
nected directly to the LCD data and clock signals from
the LH77790A/B. The DISP control input of the panel is
tied to VCC to permanently enable the LCD panel.
The LM4Q30TA and LM5Q40TA DMTN panels oper-
ate from a 3.3V supply voltage and use 3.3 V signal lev-
els. U5 on the add-on board translates the 5 V LCD
signals from the LH77790A/B to 3.3 V signals required by
the DMTN panels. The ENAB control inputs of the panels
are tied to VCC to permanently enable the panels.
A to D Converter
An ADC10154 A/D converter (ADC) from National
Semiconductor is used for the touch panel interface
and for the digitization of the voice input signal.
VREF+ of the ADC is connected to the +5 V VCC.
The PWM2 output of the LH77790A/B is used to pro-
vide the CLK signal for the ADC. The highest CLK sig-
nal that can be applied to the ADC in this way is about
3 MHz when the LH77790A/B is running at 24 MHz.
The interrupt request signal INT from the ADC is
not used.
