INTRODUCTION
The Evaluation Unit for the LH77790A/B microcon-
troller, part number LU7790H2BK1, which is part of the
LH77790A/B Hardware Development Toolkit, provides
a very complete and versatile application development
platform for products incorporating LCD panels, and
helps to greatly reduce time-to-market.
With the ongoing miniaturization of portable elec-
tronics equipment, keyboards and keypads will
increasingly be replaced by alternative input methods
such as touch screens and voice recognition.
At the same time, recent developments in LCD tech-
nology such as DMTN LCDs and low cost high quality
passive color LCDs are rapidly being adopted for por-
table electronics equipment.
To allow an effortless evaluation of these technolo-
gies with the LH77790A/B microcontroller, SHARP has
developed the add-on board LU7790H2D1A for the
LU7790H2BK1 Evaluation Unit.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The LU7790H2D1A add-on board plugs into the
expansion connector of the LU7790H2AB0 evaluation
board and provides basically three functions which can
be used independently or in any combination:
Interface to DMTN and passive color LCD panels
Interface to resistive touch screen
Interface for speech recognition
The add-on board contains a switching power sup-
ply to generate the positive VEE voltage required to
drive the DMTN and color LCD panels. For the DMTN
panels, which operate at 3.3 V, a voltage regulator and
a level shifter generate the proper supply voltage and
interface signal levels. The board provides Flat-Flex-
Cable (FFC) connectors to directly connect the speci-
fied LCD panels. The board also provides power supply
connectors for the LED backlight of the DMTN panels
and for the voltage inverter required for the LM5Q32. A
simple modification (one wire jumper) is required on the
LU7790H2AB0 evaluation board to be able to use the
LCD interfaces on the add-on board.
The add-on board contains a 4-channel, 10-bit A to
D converter (ADC) which is used for the touch screen
interface and for the digitalization of the voice input sig-
nal, for example for speech recognition functions. The
ADC has an 8-bit parallel bus interface that is con-
nected to the data bus of the LH77790A/B. One CE sig-
nal of the LH77790A/B is used to select the ADC. A
PWM output of the LH77790A/B provides the clock sig-
nal for the ADC.
The touch screen interface provides a 4-wire con-
nector to a resistive touch screen. The switches
required to drive the X- and Y-planes of the touch
screen are controlled through four PIO lines of the
LH77790A/B. Two of the four ADC channels are used
to measure the X- and Y-coordinate voltages.
For speech recognition functions, the add-on board
contains the circuitry to amplify and filter the input sig-
nal from an Electret microphone. Gain and compres-
sion are adjustable. One ADC channel is used to
digitize the analog voice signal.
