INPUT FILTERING AND SOURCE IMPEDANCE
Thenoiseandthedistortionoftheinputamplifierand
othercircuitrymustbeconsideredsincetheywilladd
totheLTC1403-1/LTC1403A-1noiseanddistortion.The
small-signalbandwidthofthesample-and-holdcircuitis
50MHz.Anynoiseordistortionproductsthatarepres-
entattheanaloginputswillbesummedoverthisentire
bandwidth.Noisyinputcircuitryshouldbefilteredprior
totheanaloginputstominimizenoise.Asimple1-pole
RCfilterissufficientformanyapplications.Forexample,
Figure1showsa47pFcapacitorfromAIN+togroundanda
51Ωsourceresistortolimittheinputbandwidthto47MHz.
The47pFcapacitoralsoactsasachargereservoirforthe
inputsample-and-holdandisolatestheADCinputfrom
sampling-glitchsensitivecircuitry.Highqualitycapacitors
andresistorsshouldbeusedsincethesecomponents
can add distortion. NPO and silvermica type dielectric
capacitorshaveexcellentlinearity.Carbonsurfacemount
resistorscangeneratedistortionfromselfheatingand
fromdamagethatmayoccurduringsoldering.Metalfilm
surfacemountresistorsaremuchlesssusceptibletoboth
problems.Whenhighamplitudeunwantedsignalsareclose
infrequencytothedesiredsignalfrequency,amultiple
polefilterisrequired.Highexternalsourceresistance,
combinedwiththe13pFofinputcapacitance,willreduce
therated50MHzbandwidthandincreaseacquisitiontime
beyond39ns.

AIN+andAIN–inputsexceeds1.25V,theoutputcodewill
stayfixedatzeroandallonesandifthisdifferencegoes
below–1.25V,theoutputcodewillstayfixedatoneand
allzeros.

may swing up to 3VP-Pindividually.Intheconversion
range,eachinputisalwaysupto1.25Vmorepositiveor
morenegativethantheinvertinginputofeachchannel.The
INTERNAL REFERENCE
TheLTC1403-1/LTC1403A-1hasanon-chip,temperature
compensated,bandgapreferencethatisfactorytrimmed
near 2.5V to obtain ±1.25V input span. The reference
amplifier output VREF, (Pin 3) must be bypassed with
acapacitortoground.Thereferenceamplifierisstable
withcapacitorsof1Forgreater.Forthebestnoiseper-
formance,a10Fceramicora10Ftantaluminparallel
witha0.1Fceramicisrecommended.TheVREFpincan
be overdriven with an external reference as shown in
Figure3.Thevoltageoftheexternalreferencemustbe
higherthanthe2.5VoftheclassApull-upoutputofthe
