Maxim’s“AutoShutdownPlus”feature.It
differs from our existingAuto On-line by
relying on signal transitions rather than
voltage levels to trigger shutdown and
wakeup.
AutoOn-LinePlusautomaticallyputsthe
deviceintoastandbymodewhereitdraws
only1μAtypical.Whenthedevicedetects
activityoneitherthereceiverordriverin-
putsitwillautomaticallyawakeandactivate
to allow serial communication. Both the
wakeup and shutdown happen automati-
cally,withoutanyuserintervention,special
drivers,orsoftwaremodifications.
Wakeup and shutdown can be exter-
nally controlled by the ONLINE and
SHUTDOWNpins.WhenONLINEisdriv-
en to logic LOW, the Auto On-line Plus
functionisactive.DrivingSHUTDOWN to

nectedperipheralareturnedoff.

RingIndicatorsignalortodeterminewheth-
eraliveRS232driverorcableisconnect-
ed. By connecting the STATUS output to
ONLINEinput,theSP3224E-SP3227Ewill
shutdownwhennovalidsignalleveland
noinputtransitionsaredetected,andwake
uponavalidsignallevelorsignaledge.Ifit
detectsnosignaltransitionswiththepast30
seconds,thedevicewillgointolowpower
mode.ByconnectingtheSTATUSoutputto
boththeONLINEinputandSHUTDOWN
inputpins,thedeviceentersintoshutdown
whennotreceivingavalidRS-232signalvoltage
input.
