The
BCM93120
QAMLink Cable Set-Top Box Reference
Design is a complete cable set-top box decoder incorporating
Broadcom’s highly integrated modem, audio, video and graphics
technology. The
BCM93120
receives and transmits data directly
to/from the cable-TV coax network. The upstream, in-band (IB)
and out-of-band (OOB) channels are implemented using the
BCM3120 Single-Chip QAMLink Set-Top Box Transceiver.
The audio AC-3, MPEG2/DC2 transport and MPEG2 video
decoder, and graphics technology are implemented using the
BCM7010 Set-Top Box Decoder. This reference design comes
complete with a diagnostic/debug interface and software device
drivers/interface for these highly integrated Broadcom devices.
The
BCM93120
provides a complete solution for two
downstream channels (IB and OOB) along with an upstream
channel. Universal FEC and synchronization circuitry is
implemented to support ITU-T J.83 Annex A/B/C,
DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS, DVB and DAVIC standards. The IB
subsystem incorporates a cable-TV tuner with a built-in diplex
filter and 6-MHz SAW filter (optional 8-MHz SAW filter for PAL
applications), direct picture IF down conversion, A/D converter,
QAMLink demodulator, adaptive equalizer, and universal
forward error correction (FEC). The OOB path is frequency-agile
and includes the OOB tuner, demodulator, FEC, and packet
filtering. The upstream includes a diplexer interface, power
amplifier, FEC encoder, and QPSK/16QAM burst modulator.
Key peripherals required in set-top box applications are also
incorporated in the BCM3120 including timer/counters,
UARTS, all system memory control, and external interfaces for
Infrared (IR) receiver/transmitter, keypad controller and LED
controllers.
The
BCM93120
backend technology includes MPEG2/DC2
transport demux and filtering, MPEG2/DC2 video decoder, an
8-bit on-screen display (OSD) graphics engine, NTSC/PAL
video encoder with Macrovision, triple video DAC output,
Dolby Digital AC-3 decoder with analog two-channel and
SPDIF outputs, and all DRAM memory control.
The
BCM93120
utilizes the MC68331 microcontroller as the
system CPU. This low-performance CPU demonstrates that the
Broadcom set-top box chipset requires minimal CPU support
and overhead in cost-sensitive set-top box applications. This is
due to the hardwired nature of the functionality within the
Broadcom chipset.
The
BCM93120
Reference Design utilizes Broadcom’s highly
integrated set-top box chipset to enable low-cost and low-risk
cable set-top box designs. The software device drivers and
debug support offered in this reference design allow Broadcom
customers rapid time to deployment. This design is field-proven
and provides legacy support for all North American cable
operations.
